The Study of Christianity and Social Problems, (69) 31-60, Dec, 2020 Peer-reviewedIn this paper, I focus on Maurice Gregory’s visit to Japan from 1911 to 1912 as a director of the British Committee of the International Federation for the Abolition of State Regulation of Vice and how the Japanese Purity Agitation Society ‘Kakusei-kai’ joined the membership of the Federation. I explain how Gregory as a Quaker became interested in the relationship between the problems of the opium trade under the governance of the British Empire and problems of the Japenese licensed prostitution when Gregory and his friends started publishing the Banner of Asia in Bombay in 1889.

The Study of Christianity and Social Problems, (68) 35-60, Dec, 2019 Peer-reviewedIn this thesis, I examine articles from the salvation army publications on Japanese free cessation movements (Jiyu Haigyo Undo) in four bulletins from the salvation army international headquarters in Britain compared with articles in the Japanese War Cry to make it clear how relationships and the division of the roles between the British and the Japanese salvation army were, and who governed decision-making in free cessation movements in the early period. Here, I will also show that the historical background of the establishment of the Japanese first rescue home for women by the salvation army was the same kind of experiences as in Ceylon.

(69) 91-129, Dec, 2020 Peer-reviewedThis article is the first installment of a series which introduce primary sources on the history of the free cessation (Jiyu Haigyo) movement in OZAWA Saburo Collection of Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences, Doshisha University. In this article, I introduce historical materials of the first series of trials for the right of free cessation of licensed prostitutes in Japan. Its strategy was created by Ulysses Grant Murphy, a missionary, for Fude Sano who hoped to leave licensed prostitution quarters. I also introduce contributions to this movement from Heizo Hirata, Rikizo Koba, Motoichiro Ogimi, and Jumpei Matsuda.

Berkshire Conference 2017, Jun 4, 2017This presentation analyzed international emancipation movements for Japanese prostitutes that took place around 1900. In the late 19th century Japan, although movements against licensed prostitution had begun, there was a lack of concrete methods on how to rescue licensed prostitutes being treated like sex slaves. This presentation is based on the following historical materials: books by U. G. Murphy, Japanese and British periodicals of the Salvation Army, Japanese periodicals of Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, and Japanese newspapers. This will introduce types of international efforts made for these movements, and how the situation of Japanese prostitutes changed. The above-mentioned emancipation movements rescued many Japanese prostitutes and also reports in newspapers assisted in the wide-spread understanding of red-light districts issues. However, because it was not an abolishment movement, Japanese licensed prostitution systems remained. This became the foundation of “comfort women” system for the military and many women in Japanese colonies became victims. The aim of this presentation is to analyze the definition and limitations of these movements and to further the current discussions regarding the history of sex-slavery issues.
