The Star Wave Test (SWT) uses special A5 paper, but no study has focused on the effect of paper size on this test. In this study, we examined the effect of paper size on the drawer in the SWT. The participants were 40 adolescent adults who were asked to complete the test twice on A5 and A4 paper, and to rate their impressions of their drawings. Analysis of variance was conducted using paper size and impression rating. The results showed significant differences, with the drawers feeling that they were able to express themselves more vividly on A5 paper than on A4. An analysis of unstructured responses using the KJ method indicated that drawing on A5 “gives a sense of security” and “can express the inner world as an image,” while drawing on A4 “gives a sense of tension”. In other words, use of A5 paper can elicit more emotional expression from the drawer.
